No Holds Barred: Andre Berto, Josesito Lopez, PBC on Spike TV

Post by nhbnews on Thu Mar 12, 2015 7:20 pm

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the Andre Berto-Josesito Lopez welterweight fight and speaks with both fighters about what to expect in their March 13 showdown.

In what is considered a crucial fight in the careers of both men, Andre Berto (29-3, 22 KOs) will face Josesito Lopez (33-6, 19 KOs) on the debut Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) show on Spike TV. This takes place Friday, March 13, at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. The co-feature will have Shawn Porter (24-1-1, 15 KOs) facing Roberto Garcia (36-3, 23 KOs).

We spoke with both Andre Berto and Josesito Lopez on Monday's media conference call. We also comment on the reception of the PBC's telecasts, how it may plan to recoup the investments made through the various time buys on several TV networks, why PBC is attempting to reduce the usual sleaziness associated with boxing in order to succeed on free TV, and more.

Looks like you cut the intros on your shows. I kind of liked them. I would listen just to see who you add and who you wouldn't. When I first listened to your show it sounded impressive having all these people in the combat sports world name dropping you. It was kind of cool.

I like listening to boxing analysis. It always sounds so interesting.
I would be surprised if boxing really does have trouble with advertisers ans sponsors. The violence and spectacle comes with the game. Too, I always thought of boxing as this semi-classy traditional sport that turned hipster after MMA came onto the seen. I would imagine in the future combat sports getting extremely targeted advertising: like nothing but commercials of Tapout like shirts, energy drinks, Reebok, and Call of Duty.

Yeah, the intros were getting too long, especially when I do a show on catch wrestling. It almost became arranging seats at a dinner or something like that. So I may do them again, especially the core ones, and I still do at least one per show, but we shall see.

Boxing has to prove itself to the advertisers. They think the audience is made up of old, grizzled men, who are Blacks, Latinos, or immigrants or their direct descendants. The largely whiter, younger, richer, and dumber MMA fans are perceived as being bigger marks for whatever crap the advertisers are hawking. This is the stereotyped way most of them think, with their pitiful 'research' methods which defy logic.

Plus, most of the ad types don't watch boxing, and the older ones remember from the 1980s Mancini-Duk Koo Kim, Holmes-Cobb, and Collins-Resto, which were all live on network TV. Notice the first PBC on NBC show didn't have a lot of non-boxing commercials, and PBC needs to sell its own ads to make money. Perhaps winning the night in the 18-49 age group will help.

As far as Berto-Lopez, as I said, this is it for them. They have to be smart and aggressive. Both guys have been dropped a lot before, so I expect fireworks and probably a stoppage. Then we await the ratings.

Josesito Lopez, 146.3 vs. Andre Berto, 146. Roberto Garcia no-showed the weighin and is scratched as Shawn Porter's opponent.
