Emanuel Yarbrough passes away at 51

Post by Rizin=PRIDEFC on Wed Dec 23, 2015 11:06 am

I have confirmed the very sad news that sumo legend, All-American wrestler, and MMA fighter Manny Yarbrough passed away in Virginia on Monday, December 21, at the age of 51. The cause of death at this time is not known, although, according to his longtime manager, Beatrice H. Davis, he had been in ill health recently which had forced the cancellation of his public appearances. Funeral arrangements are pending.

According to his manager and his web page, http://meetmannyy.com, the six-foot, eight-inch, 600+ pound Manny, who carried the ironic nickname “Tiny”, was “certified as 4th Dan/Yodan by Nihon Sumo Renmei in 1996. He was the Sumo World and North American Sumo Champion in 1996 and 1997, and has been a Member of the U.S. National Team since 1992. A former High School and NCAA Division II All-American and Freshman All-American Wrestler and Football player (Morgan State University), Tiny also competed in Mixed Martial Arts competitions, including Ultimate Fighting Championship 3, Pride 3 (Tokyo Japan), WUSA Shootboxing Championship (Tokyo Japan).”

Here is a press release sent by his manager, Beatrice H. Davis, of Sassy B Worldwide Productions, Inc.:

The World Is Mourning The Loss of “The Gentle Giant,” Actor, Motivational Speaker, Former World Amateur Sumo Champion and Guinness Book Records Holder, “Heaviest Athlete,” Emanuel Yarbrough.

Chicago, IL Dec. 22, 2015 – The world is mourning the loss of the gentle giant, former world amateur sumo champ, Guinness book of world record holder, Emanuel Yarbrough.

Emanuel Yarbrough passed away yesterday, December 21, 2015 in Richmond, VA. He became famous as the first African American to achieve the Sumo Amateur World Championship Title, the heaviest athlete in the world, and as an actor, co-starred next to Diane Keaton , Mickey Rourke and many others. His life was continuous struggle with food addiction and as he always stated, “I am a Prisoner in my own body!”

Emanuel constantly demonstrated the need to help the obese, particularly children, and traveled the world and around the Globe to bring awareness to obesity.

He was The Sumo Ambassador, and Emanuel made Sumo a popular sport both in the USA and around the world.

Emanuel’s passion was to travel, even though it was not an easy task for him, it never stopped him from following his dreams, and bringing smiles to the faces of all he would meet. He was to be the subject of a new reality show, and would have continued to bring smiles to all those who had the opportunity to be blessed by his infectious, compassionate, loving presence.

He will be missed by his millions of fans around the world, friends and family.

You should use the articles I did on ADCC News and am doing on him, as the Zuffa Zombie's one is filled with inaccuracies.

I read on USAWrestling that he was a D1 All-American (placing 8th) as well as D2, as his school apparently switched to D1 his final year.

USA Wrestling's piece was not that bad, unlike much of the MMA 'media'. But they didn't mention how Manny was forced out of wrestling when upper weight limits were put in both international and college wrestling.
