There’s plenty going on in the world of Bellator President Scott Coker ahead of Friday’s Bellator 148 event at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif. The main card airs on Spike following prelims on MMAjunkie.

Coker revealed to MMAjunkie that Bellator 148 headliner Paul Daley (37-13-2 MMA, 3-0 BMMA), who meets Andy Uhrich (11-5 MMA, 1-2 BMMA) in a welterweight bout, is likely to meet longtime rival Josh Koscheck in the summer. He also said he intends on having “serious discussions” with MMA legend Wanderlei Silva about signing with the promotion.

There’s a lot more going on with the organization besides those topics, though. Check out what else Coker touched on in a recent interview with MMAjunkie.

Free agent updates

Silva isn’t the only big-name free agent that recently experienced the end of his UFC contract.

Several big-name fighters such as former UFC lightweight champ Benson Henderson, longtime heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem, bantamweight prospect Aljamain Sterling and “The Ultimate Fighter 10” veteran Matt Mitrione are all free to field offers from non-UFC promotions.

Coker said he’s engaged in conversation with essentially every relevant name. He wasn’t ready to discuss details about which fighters are and aren’t most likely to sign, but said there’s a strategy in mind regarding which athletes he plans to pursue hardest.

“We’re in dialogue with a lot of those guys,” Coker said. “Some will fit, some won’t. We’ll make some good offers to some of them, and we might not make any offer to others. … I’m hopeful we’ll grab some guys out there on the free agent market.

“The fighters are judged by this measuring stick: Can you move the rating needle, and can you draw in the attendance? Free agents want a lot of money, but they need to deliver ratings for us. I’m not sure every free agent out there has that right now.”

Return of the heavyweight champion?

Bellator heavyweight titleholder Vitaly Minakov (17-0 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) hasn’t competed for the organization since April 2014 and has spent almost the entirety of the past two years fighting overseas in his native Russia.

It’s a strange situation because Bellator hasn’t provided much of an update regarding Minakov’s status. Coker finally opened up and said a lingering contract situation has put the two sides at a standstill since Minakov’s most recent Bellator contest.

Vitaly Minakov
“It’s really a contract issue that happens all the time in this business,” Coker said. “We’re trying to work it out, work through it. I think we will. I don’t think we’re that far apart. It’s a contract issue, and he’s been fighting in Russia for another company.

Coker said he expects the situation will soon be resolved and expects to see Minakov defending his title as soon as possible.

“I’m hopeful; I believe you’ll see him in 2016,” Coker said. “I know we’ve said over and over that he’s going to be coming back, but I really believe it’s going well. Sometime in mid-2016 I believe he will be fighting for Bellator again.”

Miletich vs. Shamrock-Gracie winner?

Former UFC champion Pat Miletich (29-7-2), who has been retired since he last fought in December 2008, raised some eyebrows recently when he said he would like to fight the winner of the Bellator 149 main event between Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie.

Miletich turns 50 in March but made it clear he feels physically capable of getting back in the cage again, especially if it’s against a similarly aged fighter like Shamrock or Gracie.

Coker won’t commit to putting the fight together but said Miletich has been pestering him about a fight for some time, and he’s certainly not opposed to it.

“Pat calls me and emails me and texts me; he wants to fight,” Coker said. “I’m like, ‘Are you serious, you really want to fight?’ He says, ‘Yes. I want to fight the winner.’ I’m not sure what we’re going to do after this fight. We can talk about it. There was really no discussion of what’s going to happen after Shamrock vs. Gracie because both of these guys are legends.

“If they continue fighting, the winner of that against Miletich, I don’t know. Pat says he’s on this new diet and is running, (doing) 100 miles on bike rides. We’ll have a conversation, but who he’ll fight, or if he’ll even fight, hasn’t been discussed.”

What’s to come in 2016?

Bellator 148 will mark the first event of the year for the company. After a 2015 campaign that saw Bellator put on its biggest and best events to date, Coker said he’s looking to continue to build the product even stronger this year.

Coker said plans for 2016 should be released to the public in the coming weeks, but he did confirm that part of those plans consist of another “Dynamite” MMA/kickboxing hybrid show.

“It’s already mapped out, the whole year is mapped out,” Coker said. “We will have an announcement soon and we’ll do the next ‘Dynamite’ show and we’ll probably do it in San Jose again. That was a fun show. I’m a kickboxing fan as well, I love watching MMA and it’s the best of both worlds. That’s what ‘Dynamite’ is about.”
