Ben Rothwell: the most effective awkward fighter of these times

Post by Longtime Fan on Sun Jan 31, 2016 11:11 am

I think many will agree that Ben Rothwell is at first glance a chubby and awkward fighter with an unorthodox style that is perhaps not the best in any one area, not a master of any one trade, but he keeps on winning. I believe with last night's win over Barnett, he finally has obtained in my eyes a very good win that establishes him as a number one contender. I believe that was his fourth win in a row. Submitting Barnett with that choke was impressive.

I for one had faith in him from way back In the IFL days when he beat Roy Nelson. I knew he was very crude, and needed to fine tune many skills, but nonetheless I always felt he had something special, something that made him a bit different than the average go for broke hw. I still to this day can't pinpoint what it is, he hasn't really improved dramatically in any one department, but continues winning and hasn't been thoroughly figured out yet, I.e there isn't any blatant weaknesses that his opponents go in there trying to exploit.

It may be a combination of his size, strength, unpredictability, and brute-caveman will to go forward and pressure that may be what wins him fights. His footwork while not outstanding, isn't bad and his reflexes while a tad bit slow compared to the smaller hw's isn't a deterrent to getting him victories.

I believe this is his time. He needs to promote himself a bit better, perhaps continue portraying that lovable goof persona with an evil laugh to the masses and his popularity will continue to grow. If he adds a couple more tools to his Arsenal like a front kick and bull rush to clinch-to-takedown game, and uses his weight from top position to create better sub openings, I think he will become even more dangerous.

I also believe this is the time for him to leave to train in an elite camp where he can work on his game planning and fight iq. Jacksons perhaps.

What do you fellas think? What's your opinion on this  big grizzly bear from Michigan? Can he become a threat to werdum's belt if he does the aforementioned?

So much faith in him did I have back in 2009 when I went to the trump tower to an affliction press conference specifically to see fedor, that the only other fighter I wanted a pic with was him for some reason. He always came off as a lovable goof. Hehe

I couldn't believe he subbed Barnett.  First time Barnett subbed out to an actual sub hold.  Rothwell is on a tear and is now in title contention with Cain, Reem, and Stipe.

I remember watching him in the IFL.  He was champion there and would knock opponents out left and right.  I saw one of his fights live back then.

Always been a Rothwell fan.

I was a huge fan but he fell off hard for a min good to see him get it together.

Barnett made a mistake and paid o honestly think most guys underestimate him and they pay.

Rothwell is still vulnerable in the standup Barnett busted him up pretty good i could see stipe or jds out bocing him or koing him.

Cain would grapple fuck him and od like to see a overeem rematch.

I'd like to see him fight Reem again as well. That rematch makes sense, since Reem took out JDS who is higher ranked than everyone except Cain, so now Reem is up there top 3.

Ben is a good fighter but his success tells a lot about the UFC HW division. I don´t think Ben is better now than back in IFL.

He was real good in IFL, had a minor bit of a slump against top competition, and is now on a tear again.

People really need to start taking rothwell seriously

if he had the perfect muscular physique then people would be all over him

he's fucking knocking out overeem on the feet and submitting josh barnett!

WHO THE FUCK would have thought this 5 years ago seriously

I like rothwell because UFC wants to pick and choose their champions and they clearly dont want Ben rothewell

I bet rothwell beats CIGANO! seriously

Some real good points Stu. I know, it's crazy with the KO over Reem and submitting Barnett. He deserves a title shot for that.

I would take him over JDS now as well. I would never have thought that 2 years ago.

A Cain match won't happen because Cain would get injured and a fight wouldn't be scheduled until Rothwell retired.

He's not from Michigan. He's from Wisconsin.

I've been a fan for a long time. Always tough and usually entertaining.

It is nice to see him still around and doing well. He has a lot of heart and will power. He has persevered and is near the top of the heavyweight division.
