Fedor vs Maldonado II: Are you in?

Post by Kinosis on Sat Jun 18, 2016 10:58 am

I've been contacting Jerry Millen, Rizin, Maldonado, etc to get this fight made in the first round of the Rizin Open Weight GP. If you are also interested, contact them on twitter and let them know. I threw the idea at Ariel Helwani as well even though I don't like him. It adds two great fighters to the tournament and has a built in story line.

Maldonado is 24-0 in boxing (and has had 2 fights this year in boxing) with 23 KO's. He is a good boxer. His weakness is the ground game and that is where most people beat him. But against Fedor, Wanderlei, etc, guys who stand with him, he is dangerous.

Another idea is have Wanderlei Silva or Jaideep vs Maldonado in the first round. Both would probably stand with him and make it an exciting fight. Giving Maldonado a chance to win and earn a chance against Fedor in the semi-finals.

I'm not AGAINST against it, but I'd rather see Fedor move on to bigger things.

I don't need to see him outbox Maldanado again and maybe be caught and knocked out. It's a dangerous strategy, but Fedor is Fedor.

Fedor won the fight. It wasn't an easy fight, but Fedor won and proved he was the superior guy. Let's have a new opponent going forward.

I kind of like the idea of giving Maldonado a spot in the tournament but letting him fight someone else. Wanderlei, King Mo, Jaideep, whomever. Then if he gets past the first round he can earn a chance to rematch Fedor (assuming Fedor also makes it past the first round).

Plus it wouldn't be that big of an issue that way since, if Fedor wins, he would have another fight that night anyway in the finals so it wouldn't really be a "wasting a fight" type of scenario. But ultimately, you are right in that if Fedor doesn't rematch him, no big deal. He beat Maldonado and if Fedor beats some other guy next people will forget all about it anyway.

I love the idea of putting Maldanado in the tournament and I'd say he earned it with his performance.

I'd like tournaments like that to have a random draw system for the first round matchups.

If you wanted you could do it like FIFA with rankings and pots in order to sort of try to match the better fighters softer in the first round, but that's problematic because it's really hard to accurately rank fighters.

I know Fedor can beat Maldonado easily if he uses his sambo.
Gameplan for next fight: Clinch, takedown, armbar Very Happy

Fedor is so great because he never takes the easy route like everyone else would.

Fedor hardly even wanted to kick or knee, even though when he did it was extremely effective. Fedor wanted to box the boxer.

I'd like to see the rematch and then this ^ strategy applied. Fedor armbar round 1.

^Yeah, if it happens, great, especially if he makes it look easy this time with a good gameplan. If not, I guess people will move on to talking about his next fight, whomever that is. Since he only has a certain number of fights left, I'd rather see him try to avenge a loss if he has to have a rematch.

Perhaps more than anything, I'm concerned he seemed to lose some muscle mass. I hope he hasn't stopped his weight lifting he was doing. He still looked pretty buff on NYE and had a lot of power in his punches.

Same here, that's what I'd rather see.

He did look a bit bigger on NYE for some reason which wasn't that long ago.

The announcer said during the fight that he doesn't like the nickname 'The Last Emperor', as the last emperor of Russia was Czar Nicholas II.

Fedor was the supreme king of MMA for a long period of time. Fedor is back to reclaim his crown.

Wish him luck on his enterprise.

Don't talk about 'he only has so many fights left' or anything like that.

Physically Fedor is perfectly fit to fight.

He almost had only one fight left. If the fight would have been stopped in the first round, there was a good chance Fedor's comeback was gonna be over.

It's one fight at a time, but don't have any doubt, Fedor's goal is to prove himself as the best fighter in the world, once again.

I'm just hoping for his upcoming fights he trains hard with a great camp and has real good planning going into these fights; grappler the strikers, strike with the grapplers,... I think this fight could have been over in round 1 or 2 if Fedor planned it right. I think he could have gotten the fight to the ground quickly and often and finished it there.

^I'd watch. I do hope Rizin gives Maldonado a fight, I think he earned it with his last performance.

^Maldonado would be a good fit for the OW GP and the RIZIN roster.
