Frank Mir Says He’s Requested Release from UFC

Post by Kinosis on Tue Jul 05, 2016 7:54 pm

One of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s longest-tenured company men wants to part ways with the promotion.

Former heavyweight champion Frank Mir revealed during an interview on "The MMA Hour” on Tuesday that he has requested his release from the UFC. All but two of Mir’s 29 career bouts have taken place inside the Octagon.

"As of now I'm under suspension, as of April 2018 I'll be eligible to fight again the UFC, and even more, as troubling as that is, they have it to where I can't do any broadcasting," Mir said. "Not that I was ever going to get it in there, just because I've been asking for several years since the WEC since put this in the rotation, right now I'd like to be released by the UFC so I can continue my career in other avenues.”

The 37-year-old Mir last competed at UFC Fight Night in Brisbane, Australia, where he suffered a first-round knockout loss to Mark Hunt on March 19. After the bout, Mir was informed of a potential anti-doping violation, which he immediately denied. Later, Mir revealed that his ‘B’ sample was retested and also came back positive for oral turinabol metabolites, which are generally classified as anabolic steroids. The heavyweight denied taking the drug and even speculated that the result occurred because of tainted kangaroo meat eaten while in Australia.

As a result of that test, Mir received a a two-year suspensions from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. The Las Vegas resident revealed on “The MMA Hour” that he decided to bypass the appeal process due to potential expenses.

It doesn’t sound as though Mir is interested in competing for another promotion once his suspension ends. Instead, he hopes to resume his broadcast career elsewhere. He served as an studio analyst for UFC on Fox before the punishment was imposed and also previously worked for the now-defunct World Extreme Cagefighting promotion.

"After I realized three weeks ago the situation in its entirety, and looked at my savings account and what my kids cost to raise, I realized I have to go make a living," Mir said.

Mir has compiled a 16-11 record during his UFC tenure, earning wins over the likes of Antonio Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Roy Nelson, Mirko Filipovic, Brock Lesnar and Tim Sylvia over the course of his career. The submission specialist has lost six of his last eight fights.

So how about Fedor/Minakov/Kharitonov vs Frank Mir? Also, I assume he has to fight in Russia or Japan or somewhere right? Bellator or any U.S. promotion is off the table for him.

Nice.  Would be cool to see Mir in the Rizin ring and Bellator cage against some of those fighters you mention. Hope they release him like he requested.

The Rizin OWGP would be very possible. Of course he would go back to juicing if it's an org that doesn't test. Even living in the U.S. but fighting in Japan would make it hard for Rizin to test him, but anyway.

I don't think he can fight in Bellator since he failed his drug test in the U.S., it would be like when Wanderlei was suspended here, he has to wait for his suspension to be up before fighting in Bellator. That leaves pretty much Rizin, EFN, M-1 or Onefc.

Good points. If he went to Rizin the GP would make sense. They would need to sign him quick but it is doable if UFC lets him go now.

^Would be real cool to see him in there.  UFC should just grant his release. He's not even a big contender HW anymore.

No. 1...LOL.  Not quite. He's 2 - 6 in his last 8 fights over the past 4 years.

Exactly. I wouldn't mind seeing him fight Kharitonov in Bellator, Fedor in EFN (or wherever he ends up) or Minakov. Ivanov in WSOF would also be good.

Yeah, I'd like to see WSOF join the Rizin group. In addition to Fedor/Blagoy, they could make a lot of other real good fights with other orgs. They have a solid roster.

Lol yes. His record is a against top comp which gives him the right to call himself #1 outside the UFC (if he were to leave), the outside the UFC guys need to beat that level of comp if they want to be his equal (beat the best to be the best).

With that record over that many years, not sure if he would make contenders.

I didn't realize Todd Duffee was top competition...His only other win is Bigfoot, who is 1-4 since getting off of TRT.

So your argument is getting beat every fight is enough to put you over guys who win....simply because it's in the ufc, even though over and over again guys have come into the ufc and beat all of the supposed "top competition" there.  Dude, you are a troll.

Yeah, I don't even know if Mir would be top 15.

^Beats me, but he is going to have to win some fights because going 2-6 in his last 8 won't get him ranked anywhere. Not to mention he failed his PED test and then lied about it trying to blame kangaroo meat lol.

I'd be all for him getting released and fighting in the Rizin OWGP.

^I think that's what some of these fighters are thinking.  They see Fedor fighting in Rizin, EFN, now possibly Bellator and they probably want to follow suit.

Duffee was the #31 HW at the time, not elite but still top. Prior to that he won against Bigfoot who was the #7 HW. Mir deserves his rank.

^When Frank Mir beat him, Bigfoot hadn't even won a fight in over 2 years. He was coming in off 2 KO losses and a Draw against Hunt where he tested positive. There is no way he should have been ranked at #7. UFC rankings don't mean anything.

Regardless of all of that, Mir has lost twice since then and wasn't in the top 10 when he beat Bigfoot. In fact, he was coming in off 4 losses in a row. The Bigfoot fight was in 2015 and Mir's last win before that was in 2011 lol. 1 win, over a guy who shouldn't even be in the top 10, followed by multiple losses and a failed drug test, doesn't make one a top 10 fighter.

You are free to make all the excuses you like, and if Mir is released he can certainly work to earn a top 10 spot, but there is no way he deserves one now. One has to actually win some fights first, which he hasn't been doing.
