Fedor fought cans false narrative

Post by Kinosis on Tue Jul 19, 2016 1:03 am

After asking Fedor haters to list all of the "Cans" he fought during his career, and never having them respond because they realize it's a false narrative, I finally saw one attempt to list his "cans"...and it's laughable. Here is what he said:

"Here's a list of the cans Fedor beat during his streak:

1. Mihail Apostolov. MMA Record: 0-1

2. Kerry Schall. MMA Record: 23-13

3. Ryushi Yanagisawa. MMA Record: 24-25

4. Lee Hasdell. MMA Record: 13-16

5. Chris Haseman. MMA Record: 20-17

6. Egidijus Valavičius. MMA Record: 29-11

7. Yuji Nagata. MMA Record: 0-2

8. Zuluzinho. MMA Record: 11-8

9. Hong-man Choi. MMA Record: 4-4

So baring this list in mind 33% of Fedor's vaunted winning streak consisted of cans!"

This would still leave Fedor with a record of 27-4, which is amazing, but when you actually look at the fighters he listed, it's a pathetic attempt at Fedor hating. He listed 9 "cans" on Fedor's record and 5 of them were in his first 11 fights lol. Every beginner fights other unknowns to make a name for themselves. Then he went to Pride and after that time only fought 4 "Cans". So in reality, out of his 36 wins, he fought 4 "cans". He also listed their records now, not what their records were when Fedor fought them, to try and make it seem worse (typical deceitfulness from a Fedor hater). It should also be noted that 7 of the 9 guys listed, Fedor fought in the first 3.5 years of his career.

Now let's look at their records when Fedor fought them, and why he fought them:

Hong-man Choi was 1-0 in MMA and 12-4 in kickboxing when Fedor fought him. He is also 7'1 and 350lbs. It was a freakshow fight on NYE as everyone knows but he was still dangerous at the time.

Zuluzinho was 7-0 in MMA when Fedor fought him. He is also 6'7 390lbs. Another guy dangerous for his size, undefeated and a freakshow match on NYE once again.

Yuji Nagata a 240lbs Japanese pro-wrestler. Another freakshow fight on NYE and made for the Japanese crowd. Was 0-1 in MMA, losing only to Cro Cop.

Egidijus Valavičius 4-2 when he fought Fedor, Fedor just won the Pride HW title 3 weeks before. It's a payday fight in another org, between his Pride fights.

Took the time to go through this and answer the false narrative with facts, so if anyone runs into this nonsense again you can just copy and paste if you like.  The only thing I didn't do was go through the 5 guys Fedor fought in his first 11 fights and list their records at the time Fedor fought them.  Didn't feel it was necessary, but could be done if someone wanted to.

Here is the thread on sherdog if anyone wants to jump in. Feel free to post it on any other forums you wish as well. http://forums.sherdog.com/threads/fedor-fought-cans-false-narrative.3295237/#post-119122821

Good job man. Although, I question two of these names as I don't think Yangisawa and Valavicius are "cans". They're not elite by any means and I know Fedor beat Yanagisawa when he was past his prime and Valavicius early in his career but still. Yanagisawa and Valavicius had a few decent wins to their resumes as Yanagisawa had wins over Vernon White, Semmy Schilt early in Schilt's career, Paul Varleans, Keiichiro Yamamiya, Oleg Taktarov, and Jason DeLusia while going to draws with Yamamiya, Guy Mezger, Manabu Yamada, and Yuki Kondo and challenged for the King of Pancrase. Valavicius has scored some good wins too over BAMMA Champion Jason Jones, Shooto Brazil Champion Carlos Eduardo, and Jeremy Horn.

What's funny is along with Fedor, you could say the same thing about Anderson Silva, GSP, and Jon Jones. Silva had 21 fights when he went to the UFC and only had three great wins in Sakurai, Newton, and Horn while losing with a million to one submission against Ryo Chonan and a tomato can in Daiju Takase. GSP also had a few easy fights when he first started. Jones didn't fight anyone good outside of Eduardo until his controversial loss to Matt Hamill which was the 10th fight of his career. He also had that joke title fight against Chael after Chael talked his way into it.

Not to mention that the UFC paired Anderson Silva with guys like Travis Lutter, James Irvin, Patrick Cote, Thales Leites, and Stephan Bonnar with the latter four coming at times when the company and the announcers were saying how Silva is the pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world and the greatest of all time, later on.

^Oh yeah, they aren't cans. People assume because they haven't heard of someone they must be a can, especially when they want to bash Fedor. I was just going by what the Fedor hater said, even under his own imaginary worldview where every fighter he knows nothing about is a can, Fedor still only fought 4 at most when he was a big name fighter. It just complete destroys the false notion they always throw out, that Fedor fought loads of cans in his career.

^Yeah, I have noticed the argument starting up now that Fedor must have been on PEDs. They have nothing to attacking him with so they just make up whatever nonsense they can, with zero proof, to try and bash him while defending their heroes who did test positive.

Who cares. it's smart to take easy fights. that's just good management imo.

The easier the better. He still beat the top guys of his era.

Pride knew how to build up their stars and champions; giving them 'easy' fights is part of it. Of course they also didn't mind paying their guys top dollar which they needed to do. They alternative is the Zuffa approach where every fight is vs the toughest possible opponent and the result is a game of championship musical chairs where nobody gains any star power, everyone is below the brand name.

^You mean like Hendo vs Bisping for the middle weight title? lol Their propaganda is the best fight the best 3 times a year, but that almost never actually happens. Especially not 3 times a year.

Don't forget Couture vs. Toney, Couture vs. Lesnar, Jones vs. Sonnen, Silva vs. Irvin, Silva vs. Bonnar, Liddell vs. Jardine, and Silva vs. Leites to name some.

I don't think cherry picking stuff from the orgs 23 year history tells the story. Lets look at the last year

Tate v Nunes
Alvarez v RDA
Werdum v Miocic

Those are great matchups.

A strawman doesn't tell the story either. No one said they don't ever put on good fights. They do. But you have to be a liar or completely delusional to not admit they have loads of freakshow & unwarrented fights, just like all the orgs everyone else bashes for it, while giving the ufc a free pass.

They probably do though to be fair, PRIDE fighters fought way more than UFC fighters do. Usually, it was common for a lot of PRIDE fighters to fight 3-5 times a year while UFC fighters fight 2-3. As a result, PRIDE fighters would likely fight cans than UFC fighters since not every fight can be an elite opponent.
