Minakov: Contract dispute with Bellator delaying UFC debut

Post by MR.WILLIE on Thu Sep 15, 2016 2:15 pm

As far as Vitaly Minakov is concerned, he would already be fighting for the UFC had Bellator not interfered.

BloodyElbow's Karim Zidan confirmed that Minakov will likely transition to the UFC in 2017. Speaking to Russian outlet izvestia.ru, the former heavyweight champion revealed that this was indeed likely to be the case, though he was uncertain when the move would occur because of Bellator's "strange" behaviour.

"I had signed a contract with [Bellator], not on the number of matches, but for a certain period of three years," said Minakov. "The three years have elapsed but the conditions if you are the champions of the organization, and I was to them, is that they have the right to extend twice or three times more for six months. And they did.

"My agreement with Bellator will expire in a few months. But now there is strange behavior on their part. They insist that I have to perform a few more fights under their banner, although the contract does not have a word about the number of fights. Now this issue is being studied by my lawyer."

Back in May 2016, Bellator released lightweight champ Will Brooks, who immediately signed on with the UFC. They also stripped Minakov of the heavyweight title he didn't defend since 2014, though opted not to release him. Though Minakov understands the negotiation tactics at play, he remains convinced that the UFC is in his future.

"I will say this: as soon as my contract expires with Bellator, I'll be "free agent" for no more than day. In the near future I will sign a new contract with one of the world's major promotions."

Wish Bellator would get their HW division going. I'd rather see the good HWs there than in the ufc. They need to crown a champ and start defending the title.

They need to move on from the Minakov situation. Every top company needs a hw division in place, we have Johnson vs Kongo fighting for what?? There is no champ. It should have been at least for the interim belt. I agree with you crown a champ already

If minakov wants ufc then fuck em.

Bellator obviously would like fir their former hw champ to atleast compete once more but fuck it at this point.

Kongo vs johnson is a title elimination winner gets a shot at vacant title. My understanding that another title elimination fight will be announced soon.

Bellator has a solid hw division this whole BS with minakov is tieng up the fighters......looks lije its coming to a head soon though and about damn time.

I'd like to see Bellator quickly cleanup this HW division mess. They need a new champ.

just ice the division. no one wants to see low level MMA. even in the ufc the top guys are the least skilled compared to the other weights.

HW has always been my favorite division so I hope they fix it up soon because it is a bit of a mess right now. I'd like to see Lashley step up in competition and Kharitonov get a decent opponent soon and a new champ needs to be crowned. They should maybe set up a 4 man tournament or something.

The contract was under Rebney and wasn't he the slave master with his clauses in the contracts? Also, Coker has let dudes go willingly.

Should trade Minakov last fight to another org for something they want. If he won't do it than hold him as long as they can, best for a Bellator to look both tough and fair.
