No Holds Barred: Told Ya

Post by nhbnews on Sun Aug 27, 2017 3:50 pm

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses Floyd Mayweather's tenth-round TKO in a dominating boxing match against UFC fighter and novice boxer Conor McGregor. Who was right and who was wrong in their prognostications about this fight, punching skill and technique in boxing and MMA, what real fighting looks like, deconstructing this entire sorry spectacle, what's coming up in real boxing, and more are discussed.

It ended as expected with a Mayweather finish. Conor did better than expected but wasn't enough. I enjoyed watching the fight since Conor kept it competitive until near the end when he started to fade.

There was a bit of interest in it, in that it was a display of Conor's MMA-style striking, and in some ways kind of historic.

I've recently watched some older kickboxing bouts, and been reminded that it's not been uncommon for boxers to fight in kickboxing, and there are spots where the fighters are trading hands--for example, a karate-based Japanese fighter vs a boxer.

As far as sport, Goldman makes sense in basically saying it should be considered like an exhibition more or less.

McGregor certainly fought gamely with the tools he had. He was completely spent 2/3s of the way through the fight; and at that point arguably about level on activity alone under a most sympathetic scoring.

Anyway, really good exposition I thought.

Some good points. I thought that scoring was a bit crazy. I had Conor winning the first 5 rounds. I thought it was 6-3 or maybe 5 to 4 after 9 for Conor.

I thought Conor won every round in which Mayweather didn't punch, and visa versa. Most sympathetic I could be is around level after 8, and that's being very kind to Conor. His shots were pushing, not snapping.

I think Conor threw and landed more than Floyd in most those rounds which is why I had him ahead in the fight.
