GLOBAL-MMA Ranking Update Summary (June 2012)

Marcos Galvao: Marcos Galvao jumped to the number 6 spot of the bantamweight rankings after earning a decision victory over Travis Marx at Bellator 68 on 11 May 2012. The victory moves Galvao into the Bellator Season 6 tournament finals against the winner of Hiroshi Nakamura and Luis Alberto Nogueira. Travis Marx fell to the number 9 spot of the rankings following the decision defeat.

Daniel Straus:
Daniel Straus won the Bellator featherweight tournament championship at Bellator 68 earning himself a spot at number 6 in the GLOBAL-MMA rankings. Straus also earned a shot at the Bellator featherweight title against the winner of current champion Pat Curran and Patricio Freire. Marlon Sandro now has two defeats in his last five fights. Sandro fell to number 9 in the rankings following the fight.

Aslambek Saidov:
Aslambek Saidov entered the other contenders list of the welterweight rankings after winning his seventh straight bout against Grigor Ashugbabjan at KSW 19 on 12 May 2012. Saidov is one of the top welterweights fighting for the KSW promotion. Myung Ho Bae was removed from the rankings following the entrance of Saidov.

Michal Materla: Michal Materla jumped to the number 9 spot of the middleweight rankings after earning the KSW middleweight title at KSW 19. Materla defeated Jay Silva to take the KSW middleweight strap.

Mamed Khalidov: Mamed Khalidov finished Rodney Wallace with a perfectly placed overhand right in the first round of KSW 19. Khalidov’s ranking status as the number 2 middleweight remained the same after the bout.

Mario Miranda:
Mario Miranda earned a spot in the GLOBAL-MMA middleweight top ten after submitting Arthur Guseinov at M-1 Challenge 32 on 16 May 2012 to take the interim M-1 Global middleweight title. Miranda now holds the number 7 spot while Guseinov fell to number 10 in the world. The entrance of Miranda bumped Andrei Semenov out of the other contenders list of the middleweight rankings.

Kenny “Deuce” Garner:
Kenny “Deuce” Garner landed a spot at number 8 of the heavyweight rankings by knocking out Magomed Malikov at M-1 Challenge 32 to retain the interim M-1 Global heavyweight crown. Malikov fell to number 9 in the rankings. Todd Duffee dropped out of the heavyweight rankings due to the entrance of Garner.

Richard Hale: Number 8 ranked light heavyweight, Richard Hale, was back in action at Bellator 69 on 18 May 2012. Hale walked through his opponent, Josh Burns, stopping him with punches in 38 seconds of the first round. Hale’s ranking did not change but he locked in his slot in the upcoming Bellator light heavyweight tournament starting in June.

Karl Amoussou:
Karl Amoussou entered the other contenders list of the welterweight rankings by defeating David Rickels by decision at Bellator 69 to earn a spot in the Bellator Season 6 finals. CWFC welterweight champion, Gael Grimaud, was dropped from the rankings following the entrance of Amoussou.

Maiquel Falcao: Maiquel Falcao won the Bellator Season 6 middleweight tournament championship at Bellator 69 by defeating Andreas Spang by unanimous decision. Falcao will take on number 1 ranked middleweight, Alexander Shlemenko, for the Bellator middleweight title and the top spot in the GLOBAL-MMA middleweight rankings. Falcao’s ranking and Spang’s ranking did not change following the fight.

Eric Prindle: Eric Prindle was removed from the rankings following a kimura submission in one minute of the first round at Bellator 70 on 25 May 2012 to Bellator champion and GLOBAL-MMA number 2 ranked heavyweight Cole Konrad. Todd Duffee returned to the rankings following Prindle’s departure.

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson:
Anthony Johnson won his first fight outside of the UFC at Titan FC 22 on 25 May 2012 in an uninspired performance against David Branch. Johnson came into the fight 10 pounds over the middleweight limit and the fight was re-contracted to a catch weight bout at 195 lbs. Johnson won the fight by decision. This fight affected no change to the GLOBAL-MMA middleweight rankings.

Mizuto Hirota: DEEP lightweight champion, Mizuto Hirota, was removed from the rankings after signing a contract with Strikeforce. M-1 Global standout lightweight title contender, Musa Khamanaev, entered the other contenders list of the lightweight rankings due to the removal of Hirota.

Gegard Mousasi:
Gegard Mousasi, DREAM light heavyweight champion, was removed from the GLOBAL-MMA rankings after signing a new exclusive contract with Strikeforce. M-1 Global light heavyweight contender, Maxim Grishin, entered the other contenders list of the rankings due to the removal of Mousasi. “King Mo” Lawal now sits at the top of the GLOBAL-MMA light heavyweight rankings.

Tony Lopez: Tony Lopez was dropped from the other contenders list of the heavyweight rankings after dropping a unanimous decision to Swedish fighter Ilir Latifi at United Glory – 2012 World Series on 26 May 2012. The victory was not enough to earn Ilir Latifi a spot in the rankings as Bellator heavyweight Eric Prindle returned to the rankings following the fight.

*A number of other top ranked fighters won fights against fighters ranked lower than them which did not alter their ranking status.

GLOBAL-MMA Ranking Rules

*This ranking system includes only fighters that are not under exclusive contract to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) or Strikeforce.

*Top level fighters that leave the UFC or Strikeforce may be ranked in subsequent rankings.

*Fighters that sign exclusively to the UFC or Strikeforce will be removed from the rankings.

*Fighters that are signed to non-exclusive contracts with Strikeforce, who fight for other MMA promotions (excluding the UFC), may be included in the rankings.

*Rankings are based on a fighter's overall career results and recent performance.

*Victories over highly ranked fighters and losses against non-ranked opponents have a larger effect on the fighters ranking position.

*A fighter will not necessarily take the place of his opponent after a victory or a loss against a ranked fighter.

*A fighter will be ranked number one if he defeats the number one ranked fighter in the weight division.

*A fighter will drop in the rankings if he does not fight regularly against high level competition.

*If a fighter does not fight for two years he will be removed from the rankings.

*A fighter can be ranked in two different weight divisions.

*A highly ranked fighter can get a high ranking in another weight division after one or more wins in his new weight division.

*Champions and fighters from reputable promotions will have an advantage over champions and fighters from promotions with lesser competition.

*Fighters that are signed to multiple promotions will have their promotions listed based on the following criteria: 1) championship held in a promotion, 2) predominant promotion the fighter fights in, 3) promotion
last fought in.

*Rankings will be updated every month.

Thanks. It sucks Mousasi had to be dropped. He signed a 6 fight contract extension with SF. DREAM is done from what I am reading as well today.

Thanks Audax. Aslambek Saidov is in other contenders at WW. Hopefully KSW gets him a title shot soon.

Maybe "Rumble" and Vinny are too high? Also it would be nice to see Tiger in the top 10 soon.

Yeah, Vinny has not fought in a while and he basically threw out his title so as soon as guys directly below him get a win he will get jumped over. Wiuff or Jan Blachowicz deserve that spot more than him so after their next fights, if Vinny does not beat a top opponent he will be get past up soon by the top KSW and Bellator 205ers. Wiuff has a fight coming up in a few weeks. Even if Nakanishi gets a win he could pass up Vinny. Hopefully he fights Manhoef in a rematch soon or defends his DEEP title. M'Pumbu is the only LHW in that top group that does not deserve to pass him up with a win.

Rumble looked terrible in his last fight. That fight was just terrible. I was not happy at all how he looked and he still has not made the 185 limit so there is also good reason for the fighters directly below to start passing him up soon as they get some wins. Antonio Neto, Maiquel Falcao, Mario Miranda, Vyacheslav Vasilevsky, and Michal Materla will start passing him up if they win their next fights. If Falcao beats Shlemenko he will jump to number 1 so that one is a given.

Yeah, Tiger will jump to the top ten this month since Kitaoka and Kikuno are fighting and the loser will drop to the other contenders list which will bring Tiger up to the top 10. I would love to see him continue fighting for M-1 and get a shot at Weichel for the title. That would be a sweet fight.

I just took out the M-1 Global championship next to Vinny since the title is officially vacated according the M-1 Global website. I just list "Free Agent" next to Vinny's name now.

^^ Not sure if you saw this but there is a permanent link on the top nav bar for the rankings discussion. Then there is a 2nd and 3rd one on the rankings preview on the front page. I'm not sure there needs to be another top link to the rankings on the MMA forum cause that makes 4 links to the ratings & discussion. If people want to see them & discuss they'll click the top link on the nav bar or the 2 links on the bottom right preview first.

Yeah, all the links are awesome. Do you want the thread turned to normal or sticky?

Sadly speaking, it may be time to remove Blagoi Ivanov from the rankings. I am optimistic that he can in due time make a comeback to the sport. For the time being however, that is clearly not going to happen soon. It's probably better to free up the spot for someone else.

Yeah, you're probably right. I been holding off on that in hopes that we would get good news on his recovery and potential return to MMA. Hopefully one day he does make a return. I agree it probably will not be anytime soon. I will remove him next month.

I was thinking Rogers would return to the other contenders list after removing Ivanov. Linderman (CWFC HW champ) is another potential HW there. I have both of them ahead of AA. AA was KOd quickly by Rogers and has lost a number of fights and is not scheduled to fight anyone. What are your thoughts?

Thanks to everyone for all your suggestions on the rankings. It helps me out a lot on placing these guys, determining who should jump over who with future wins, who should enter the rankings,....

I appreciate it.

Re: GLOBAL-MMA Rankings (Non-Zuffa) - June 2012

Post by wekka on Fri Jun 08, 2012 7:01 am

My thoughts:

HW:
I'd add Levan Razmadze to the list of contenders in Heavyweight. He's fighting Megatons, but he has shown some serious promise with what little he has actually shown.
I wouldn't waste Ivanov's open spot on Arlovski or Rogers. I think it would be better to either move up one of your contenders or highlight even younger talent that have been on a better run. Preferably Volkov.

LHW:
Narkun has upside, but I think he's undeserving of top ten status. Vegh, in my eyes, is a legit talent and should be at least top ten. I also believe that Mark Godbeer deserves a mention.

MW:
I think Anthony Johnson is a little overrate with a 1-1 mark at MW. Tom Watson and Ryuta Sakurai wouldbe excellent inclusions. I also think Santiago should be ahead of Miranda, regardless of his run in the UFC.

WW:
Zavurov is ranked a little too highly for my liking, he's pretty much coming off of two losses (albeit one being contentious). I don't like comparing it but it's almost like Shane Carwin status lol. Yuya Shirai should also be a contender by virtue of being DEEP champion, even though he has been through a rough patch. Gunnar Nelson, although pretty inactive, should be a contender too, as does Jim Wallhead.

LW:
Always thought Weichel was overrated. He's the M-1 champion, yes, but he really hasn't had an outstanding win outside of Ivlev. I can see him being top ten though.
Woodard honestly doesn't deserve to be ranked ahead of either Sarnavskiy and Jadamba also. Ronys Torres should also get a look, as does ISAO Kobayashi.

FW:
After his next victory, Jon Shores should definitely be moved into contender status.

BW:
Ishiwatari, Ogikubo, Nam Jin Jo, and Horiguchi should definitely be on the radar.

Great post. Thanks for the comments. Responses below:

HW:
The first edition of these rankings for this website I almost included Raz. I left him out after getting everyone's comments on the HW division rankings. Raz will be added to the other contenders list of the rankings next month since Ivanov will be removed.

LHW:
I agree, Vegh is a very solid LHW. Vegh will move up real quick in the rankings if he wins fights in the Bellator tournament. He has a fight coming up in a few weeks so if he wins I will definitely take this into account.

Narkun is a bit high on the list. He will be getting past up quick as the fighters directly below him win their fights unless he pulls off a big win against someone ranked above him.

Godbeer wasn't on my radar. I must have seen him fight on the last BAMMA card but I don't remember him. I will definitely keep an eye on him in the future. I keep a list of fighters in all the weight classes to keep an eye on for future rankings and I added Godbeer to that list.

MW:
Yeah, Anthony Johnson has not even made 185 yet. Wiuff has a fight in a few weeks and will pass him up with a win. As the other fighters directly below him get wins, they too will pass him up unless he wins a big fight before them. Johnson's last fight was a joke (terrible LNP fight he didn't even make weight for) but I couldn't lower him in the rankings since he did win the fight. I agree, though, I am not impressed with Johnson at 185 so far at all.

I do have Watson on my list of MWs to keep an eye on. I've been watching him fight for a while and he is a solid middleweight.

On the money with Sakurai. I just saw he has a recent win over top 10 ranked DEEP LHW champ Nakanishi so he will definitely be considered for future rankings. I added his name to my "others" list to watch out for. I also have former KSW MW champ Kulak on my others list if he ever returns. He won the KSW title and then disappeared off the face of the planet. I recently read that he was hurt and should be coming back to KSW soon.

I was a bit generous with Miranda after he won the M-1 interim belt. Hopefully Magomed recovers soon so they can fight for the real belt.

WW:
I did have Zavurov lower right after his last fight but then M-1 changed his last fight to a draw. Since that fight was a draw I did not lower him in the rankings that month.

I had Shirai at top ten in the past until his last loss at ONE FC. He lost 3 out of his last 5 fights. There are so many great WWs out there it is one of the hardest divisions to rank. It was hard dropping Legend champ Myung Ho Bae last month since he is a solid WW but we had to get top KSW WW Saidov in there. A number of top 30 WWs I have listed are Gael Grimaud (CWFC Champion), Ben Saunders, Yuya Shirai (DEEP Champion), Myung Ho Bae, Takenori Sato, Bruno Carvalho (M-1 Global), Nathan Coy (MFC Champ), Jim Wallhead, Dom O'Grady (Bellator and former KOTC champ), among others.

Gunnar Nelson is someone I did not have listed. I don't think I ever saw him fight before. He does have a pretty impressive record. I added him to the list on my PC to watch out for.

LW:
I do feel Weichel is deserving of top 5 because he destroyed Figueroa to win the M-1 title. He also beat 10-5 Baker and KOd 15-5 LW Khasbulaev before that. Plus, the Ivlev win. I usually give champs from the major promotions; like, Bellator, formerly DREAM, M-1, and KSW a bit of an edge in the rankings. Sarnavskiy will be moving up the ladder fast as he wins his next fights. He is an awesome LW. I would like to see him fight Weichel for the belt so hopefully he can get things worked out with M-1 here soon.

Yeah, a number of people have commented on Jadamba being too low. I will move him up after he wins his next fight and he could move up as guys directly above him lose.

Woodard is ranked so high because Patricky was ranked 5th when Woodard broke his arm to win the fight. Normally beating a top fighter doesn't necessarily mean his opponent will take his spot (except for the number 1 spot) but the victory was so impressive I gave Woodard the 5th rank spot. Plus, he was 11-1 at the time and his only loss was a decision loss against top ranked Bellator champ Chandler. After he lost to Hawn I did drop him 2 spots but I had to still keep him above Patricky who I had ranked at 9. So my choices were to rank him at 7 or 8.

Ronys Torres and Kobayashi are definitely both on my radar.

BW:
Ishiwatri and Horiguchi are both on my radar. Both are solid BWs. I just added Ogikubo and Nam Jin Jo to my others list to keep an eye on.

Thanks for taking the time to post all these suggestions. The suggestions are great and you gave me some new solid fighters to watch out for in the future.

This is awesome man. Your suggestions should be considered for the July rankings.

Agreed. These types of posts help out our G-MMA rankings the most. I try to take everyone's comments on here into consideration when adjusting the rankings.

We could do some poll threads in the future as well to get everyone's take on some of the ranking calls. Like when someone drops from the rankings and there are a number of fighters that could move in, or on placing some of the fighters when there are tough calls, or on the ranking rules,...

No problem.

Wouldn't mind helping with a Flyweight ranking either.

Yeah, flyweight division would be a good addition. There are some solid flyweights outside Zuffa.

Looks like Bibiano Fernandes will remain a G-MMA ranked fighter (top ranked BW).

He never signed with the UFC and he says that they could not reach a deal. It's looking like ONE FC offered him a better contract.

http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc/2012/6/12/3081860/bibiano-fernandes-weighing-contract-offers-from-ufc-one-fc

However, moments later, he was offered a more lucrative deal from ONE FC. Fernandes was then forced to make a difficult decision: sign with the more established UFC for less money or take a chance on ONE FC, who was offering a bigger contract.

While it initially seemed as though Fernandes was leaning towards signing with the UFC, his wife, who is seven months pregnant, wanted him to take more time weigh his options. So Fernandes and his wife have decided to wait until their child is born in two months before deciding who they will sign with. Once the UFC was made aware of that decision, they pulled him from UFC 149. Delorme is expected to receive a new opponent in the coming days.

As a result, don't expect to see Fernandes fighting for the UFC or ONE FC this summer, as was originally expected.

One is a wise choice. Ufc is overated imo.
