GLOBAL-MMA Ranking Update Summary (July 2012)

Blagoi Ivanov: Blagoi Ivanov was removed from the heavyweight rankings until he can make a full recovery from the knife stabbing heart wound he suffered and until he can return to MMA. Recently signed Bellator heavyweight star Brett Rogers returned to the other contenders list due to the removal of Ivanov. Hopefully Blagoi Ivanov can make a quick return to MMA and regain his spot in the GLOBAL-MMA top ten.

Aleksander Emelianenko:
Aleksander Emelianenko earned his third straight victory by stopping Ibragim Magomedov by TKO (Doctor Stoppage) prior to the start of the third round at M-1 Challenge 33 on 06 June 2012. Aleksander Emelianenko solidified his spot in the top ten heavyweight rankings. This victory should make him the top M-1 Global heavyweight contender.

Jorge Santiago: Middleweight contender Jorge Santiago was back in action at Titan Fighting Championship 23 on 15 June 2012 against Justin Guthrie. Santiago finished Guthrie in the first round with an inverted heel hook. The victory over unranked Guthrie did not affect a change in Santiago’s ranking status in the middleweight division.

Satoru Kitaoka: Top ten lightweights Satoru Kitaoka and Katsunori Kikuno went head-to-head at DEEP 58 Impact on 15 June 2012. Kitaoka won a unanimous decision over Kikuno. Following the victory Kitaoka moved up to the number 8 spot in the lightweight rankings while Kikuno fell to the other contenders list.

Mairbek Taisumov: Mairbek Taisumov dropped a split decision to unranked undefeated lightweight Marat Gafurov at M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Rizzo on 21 June 2012. The loss forced Taisumov out of the other contenders list of the lightweight rankings. The split decision victory was not enough to move Gafurov into the lightweight rankings. Pancrase lightweight champion, Isao Kobayashi, entered the other contenders list of the lightweight rankings following this fight.

Jeff Monson: Top ten ranked heavyweight Jeff Monson defeated Denis Komkin at M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Rizzo with his trademark north-south choke submission. The victory against unranked Komkin was not enough to move Monson up in the heavyweight rankings.

Musa Khamanaev: Musa Khamanaev stripped the M-1 Global lightweight title from Daniel Weichel with a beautiful heel hook submission in the first round at M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Rizzo. The newly crowned M-1 Global lightweight champion, Musa, moved to the number 4 spot of the GLOBAL-MMA lightweight rankings while Weichel fell to the number 9 spot.

Kenny “Deuce” Garner:
M-1 Global interim heavyweight champion, Kenny “Deuce” Garner, defeated heavyweight champion Guram Gugenishvili by doctor stoppage in the third round to unify the belts at M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Rizzo. The new heavyweight champion jumped to the number 4 spot of the rankings due to the victory. Guram fell to the number 8 spot following the defeat.

Fedor Emelianenko: Top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko finished Pedro Rizzo with a series of devastating punches in 1 minute 24 seconds of the first round at M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Rizzo on 21 June 2012. On 23 June 2012, the Last Emperor announced his retirement from the sport of MMA. DEEP heavyweight champion, Levan Razmadze, entered the heavyweight rankings following the removal of Fedor. Fedor was removed from the rankings following his retirement announcement but the legendary fighter remains as the Greatest of All Time (GOAT).

Brett “Da Grim” Rogers: Brett Rogers made his debut at Bellator 71 on 22 June 2012 against Kevin Asplund. Rogers forced the doctor to call a halt to the bout at the end of the second round earning him a TKO victory. Rogers will be entering the Bellator heavyweight tournament this fall.

Attila Vegh: Standout light heavyweight Attila Vegh returned to the Bellator cage to enter the light heavyweight tournament at Bellator 71. Vegh had no problems discarding of his quarterfinal opponent, DREAM veteran, Zelg Galesic. Vegh finished Galesic in one minute of the first round by rear-naked choke to earn a spot in the Bellator: Summer Series light heavyweight tournament semi-finals. Following the impressive victory Vegh moved to the number 9 spot of the GLOBAL-MMA light heavyweight rankings.

Travis “Diesel” Wiuff:
Veteran light heavyweight Travis Wiuff earned an impressive TKO victory over Chris Davis at Bellator 71 as part of the Bellator: Summer Series light heavyweight tournament. Wiuff also holds a victory over the Bellator light heavyweight champion making him an early favorite to take this talent filled tournament. Following the victory, Wiuff jumped over the inactive free agent Vinny Magalhaes to take the number 2 spot in the GLOBAL-MMA light heavyweight rankings. Newly signed Bellator light heavyweight “King Mo” holds the number one spot in the rankings. “Mo” also holds a past victory over Travis Wiuff in a fight that was contended in the heavyweight division in Japan at Sengoku: Fifth Battle where Wiuff was finished in the first round. It will be interesting to see if these two meet again in the Bellator cage sometime in the future, possibly to vie for the Bellator light heavyweight crown.

Leandro Issa:
Leandro Issa earned a unanimous decision victory over Masakazu Imanari at ONE FC 4: Destiny of Warriors on 23 June 2012. The victory moved Issa into the other contenders list of the bantamweight rankings. Imanari was dropped from the rankings following the defeat.

Zorobabel “Zoro” Moreira: Lightweight contender “Zoro” Moreira was in action at ONE FC 4: Destiny of Warriors against UFC and Bellator lightweight veteran Roger Huerta in a fight that was contested in the welterweight division. The BJJ standout, Moreira, dominated Huerta on the feet for two rounds finishing him with a one shot soccer kick knockout. The brutal finishing blow is an early contender for Knockout of the Year. Since the fight was held in the welterweight division, Moreira’s lightweight ranking status did not change.

Renato “Babalu” Sobral:
Renato “Babalu” Sobral entered the ONE FC cage earning an impressive armbar submission victory over Tatsuya Mizuno in 31 seconds of the first round at ONE FC 4: Destiny of Warriors. The victory moved “Babalu” up two spots in the rankings to enter the light heavyweight top ten.

* A number of other top ranked fighters won fights against fighters ranked lower than them which did not alter their ranking status.

Heavyweight: Tony Lopez, Blagoi Ivanov

3. Free Agents - 8
4. ONE FC - 4
5. KSW - 3
6. DEEP - 3
7. SFL -1

10. Shooto - 1
11. TPF - 1
12. AFC - 1

Great work, looks fantastic. Rumble is still a bit high but it´s great to see Musa and Deuce climbing the ranks.

Thanks Johan.

I read that Rumble is moving to 205 and as soon as he has a fight officially announced at 205 I will remove him from 185 since he technically never has even fought at that weight. Also, if someone directly below him wins a fight before he moves to 205 I will have them jump over Rumble due to his lack of making weight. When he moves to 205 I will take into consideration that he never made 185 when ranking him there.

Yeah, Deuce is up at number 4. He has been impressive as hell lately. That win over Guram was awesome. I was even disputing moving him to number 3 but I had Guram at 4 before the fight so I couldn't justify it.

Musa was also impressive against Artiom and Weichel. That heel hook in the first round was impressive. I really thought Weichel was going to take that based on how solid he has looked recently but Musa pulled it off in impressive fashion.

Hopefully they announce a fight for Rumble at 205 this month and he can be dropped. I was hoping it would get announced in time for these July rankings.

Are these rankings being saved? I think we should post them every month on the main news page, it would be great for people coming in and also be great to keep the history of the sport. I believe we should keep the previous rankings on a section to be like a database for future researches. What do you guys think?

Yeah, I have it listed that way since he is the champ and Miranda is interim champion. I don't list the interim titles.

Is this still the case? Do you know when he is going to return from his injury?

They are all being saved like the other posts. You can do a search on rankings on this site and all the rankings will be listed.

As far as I know M-1 vacated White Wolfs title since he was injured too long. Miranda beat Guseinov for the real title.

great job.....a few suggestions respectfully,

1.monson has to be ranked over guram......guram's competition is weak compared to monson's

2.babalu imo is the second best 205 available, not wiuff, mpumbu is not a better fighter than him, neither is vinny...

3.jorge santiago is top 10 at 185 easily, specially over guseinov for sure

my friend khalidov is #2 on your list and jorge split the 2 fights with him, top 3 for sure

I will update that for the rankings next month. That sucks though. White Wolf was a solid champ. Hopefully he returns soon.

Thanks for the comments. Responses below:

1. Yeah, if Monson gets by Duffee in their fight coming up I will move him above Guram.
2. Babalu is awesome but if you compare recent records and winning and losing streaks he is lower in the top 10. Also, I almost always give a bit of an edge to the champs of promotions like Bellator, M-1, KSW,..., so that is why those three are way up there.
3. Guseinov was the number 1 contender for the M-1 belt so I had him up there before the loss. Similar to my comment above, the champs and top contenders from the larger promotions get a bit of a boost in the rankings based on their records also and comp.,... I wish Santiago would have went to a better promotion so he would have a better chance at moving up our rankings.

Thanks for the comments.

agree on babalu and santiago, you have a point there....

but monson doesnt has to beat duffee to be better ranked than guram, tell me what fighter guram has beaten that resembles duffee, none...

he beat garner one time and got his butt kicked last time.....monson has a great resume, he beat oleinik and york recently, guram beat a 205 fighter in grishin and did not fought in a while....

thats just my point, monson resume in talent of opponents alone is far better than guram's....im not bashing him, but i bet that if they fight monson will sub him, guram cannot ko him and god knows he will not submit the 2 time abu dabi champ

Yeah, I do get your point. I had Guram previously ranked at 4. That was mainly due to his M-1 title. I almost always give an edge to the champs. Plus, he was undefeated at the time. After losing to Garner who was top 8 it was difficult to drop him more than 8. I do see where you are coming from and you have a great point. I will consider this as I update the rankings. Thanks.
