GLOBAL-MMA Ranking Update Summary (January 2013)

Alexei Kudin: Alexei Kudin dropped a unanimous decision to Mike Wessel at Bellator 83 on 07 December 2012. Kudin dropped from the heavyweight rankings following the loss. The decision victory was not enough to earn Wessel a spot in the rankings. Soa Palelei entered the rankings following the removal of Kudin.

Anthony Leone: Anthony Leone won a razor thin split decision against former Bellator bantamweight champion Zach Makovsky at Bellator 83. Leone entered the GLOBAL-MMA bantamweight top 10 with the victory as Makovsky dropped to number 8 due to the defeat. Rodolfo Marques Diniz was removed from the bantamweight rankings following the entrance of Leone.

Soa “The Hulk” Palelei: Soa “The Hulk” Palelei moved up one spot in the GLOBAL-MMA rankings heavyweight rankings following an impressive TKO victory in the first round against UFC veteran Sean McCorkle at Australian Fighting Championship 4 on 07 December 2012. The dominant performance over McCorkle showed that Soa “The Hulk” could be a force in the heavyweight division.

Daniel Weichel: Former M-1 Global lightweight champion Daniel Weichel returned to the M-1 ring at M-1 Challenge 36 on 08 December 2012 where he earned a rear naked choke submission in the second round against Geori Stoyanov. The victory over Stoyanov was not enough for Weichel to move up in the lightweight rankings.

Viktor Nemkov: Standout Russian light heavyweight Viktor Nemkov finished Gadzhimurad Antigulov with a guillotine choke in the second round at M-1 Challenge 36. Nemkov continued his rise up the light heavyweight ladder with the victory as he moved up two spots in the other contenders list.

Arthur Guseinov: Arthur Guseinov finished Evgeni Fomenko with a beautiful spinning back kick to the liver in just 55 seconds of the first round at M-1 Challenge 36. Guseinov remains in the GLOBAL-MMA middleweight top 10 with the victory.

Kenny Garner: M-1 Global heavyweight champion Kenny “Deuce” Garner successfully defended his title with a TKO victory over former champion Guram Gugenishvili at M-1 Challenge 36. Garner remains the number 2 heavyweight in the GLOBAL-MMA rankings. Guram dropped out of the heavyweight top ten to the other contenders list due to his second straight defeat to Garner.

Katsunori Kikuno: Katsunori Kikuno made his third appearance in MMA in 2012 with a quick knockout finish over Luiz Andrade in 8 seconds of the first round at DEEP – Cage Impact 2012. The quick and decisive victory earned Kikuno a one spot jump in the GLOBAL-MMA lightweight contenders list.

Alexander Volkov: Alexander Volkov defeated Richard Hale by unanimous decision at Bellator 84 on 14 December 2012 to win the Bellator heavyweight season 7 tournament and to capture the vacant Bellator heavyweight title. The new Bellator heavyweight champion jumped to the third spot in the GLOBAL-MMA rankings due to the title earning victory while Hale dropped to number 7.

Andrei Arlovski: Andrei Arlovski earned a unanimous decision victory over Mike “300” Hayes at Fight Nights – Battle of Moscow 9 on 16 December 2012. The victory against a solid top 20 opponent earned Arlovski a spot in the GLOBAL-MMA heavyweight top 10.

Petras Markevicius:
Petras Markevicius was submitted in 54 seconds of the first round by Lucas Lopes at Flawless FC 2 – Hated on 15 December 2012. Markevicius was dropped from the GLOBAL-MMA middleweight rankings due to the submission loss. WSOF middleweight, Thales Leites, returned to the rankings following the removal of Markevicius.

Aleksander Emelianenko: Russian heavyweight Aleksander Emelianenko announced his retirement from MMA on 19 December 2012. The younger brother of the greatest fighter of all time, Fedor Emelianenko, Aleksander cited health problems caused by old injuries as his reason for retirement. WSOF heavyweight contender, Rolles Gracie, entered the rankings following the removal of Aleksander Emelianenko.

Kazuyuki Miyata: Kazuyuki Miyata earned a submission victory via guillotine choke against Jae Eun Kim in the first round at DEEP – Haleo Impact on 22 December 2012. The victory had no affect on Miyata’s ranking status.

Shamil Zavurov: Russian fighter and former M-1 Global welterweight champion, Shamil Zavurov, won a unanimous decision over Juha-Pekka Vainikainen at New FC – Battle of the Stars on 22 December 2012. Zavurov’s ranking remained the same following the victory.

Keita “K-Taro” Nakamura: “K-Taro” Nakamura stopped top ZST undefeated welterweight Nobutatsu Suzuki with a rear-naked choke submission in 2 minutes 9 seconds of the first round at Vale Tudo Japan 2012 on 24 December 2012. “K-Taro” moved up two spots in the welterweight rankings following the submission victory as he now sits just one spot out of the top 5.

Will Brooks: Will Brooks entered the DREAM ring on New Year’s Eve (31 December 2012) to take on top 10 lightweight Satoru Kitaoka. The relatively unknown yet undefeated Brooks dominated Kitaoka for 2 rounds before finishing the fight by TKO. Brooks entered the lightweight contenders list and Kitaoka dropped out of the top ten. Patricky Freire was dropped from the rankings following the entrance of Brooks.

Bibiano Fernandes: Bantamweight king pin, Bibiano Fernandes, took on DEEP bantamweight champion Yoshiro Maeda at DREAM.18. It took just 1 minute 46 seconds for Fernandes to put the DEEP champ to sleep with a triangle choke submission. Fernandes remains as the top bantamweight in the GLOBAL-MMA rankings.

Shinya Aoki: Top 3 ranked lightweight, Shinya Aoki, made his long awaited return to the DREAM ring at DREAM.18 to take on top 10 ranked Antonio McKee. The submission master, Aoki, finished the fight with a powerful overhand right forcing McKee to tap out to the strike. McKee dropped two spots in the lightweight rankings to number 9. Aoki remains ranked at number 3 in the lightweight rankings.

Georgi Karakhanyan: Tachi Palace Fighting featherweight champion and top 10 ranked fighter, Georgi Karakhanyan, took on DREAM featherweight champion and number 1 ranked featherweight, Hiroyuki Takaya, at DREAM.18 on New Year’s Eve. The top featherweights fought a very technical and exciting fight inside the DREAM ring as Karakhanyan earned a split decision victory over Takaya to take the top spot in the GLOBAL-MMA featherweight rankings. Takaya fell to the number 3 spot in the rankings following the defeat.

Tatsuya Kawajiri:
Top 5 ranked featherweight, Tatsuya Kawajiri, returned to the DREAM ring in the main event of DREAM.18 on New Year’s Eve to take on Michihiro Omigawa. Kawajiri dominated the Sengoku and UFC veteran on the ground for most of the fight where he nearly landed a few arm triangle choke submissions. Kawajiri won the fight by unanimous decision to move up one in the GLOBAL-MMA featherweight rankings to the number 4 spot.

Rolles Gracie: New heavyweight contenders entrant, Rolles Gracie, met DEEP heavyweight veteran Yusuke Kawaguchi at IGF – Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye 2012 on New Year’s Eve (31 December 2012). Gracie took just two minutes to finish Kawaguchi with an arm triangle choke submission. Gracie is now on a 5 fight win streak holding an overall record of 8-1 with all 8 victories coming by way of submission. Gracie is likely to next appear on the next WSOF card in early 2013.

GLOBAL-MMA Ranking Rules

*This ranking system includes fighters that are not under exclusive contract to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) or Strikeforce.

*Top level fighters that leave the UFC or Strikeforce may be ranked in subsequent rankings.

*Fighters that sign exclusively to the UFC or Strikeforce will be removed from the rankings.

*Fighters that are signed to non-exclusive contracts with Strikeforce, who fight for other MMA promotions (excluding the UFC), may be included in the rankings.

*Rankings are based on a fighter's overall career results and recent performance.

*A fighter will be ranked number one if he defeats the number one ranked fighter in the weight division.

*Victories over highly ranked fighters and losses against non-ranked opponents have a larger effect on the fighters ranking position.

*A fighter will not necessarily take the place of his opponent after a victory or a loss against a ranked fighter.

* A fighter can move up a maximum of two spots with impressive victories over a fighter ranked under them; however, there is no limit if the fighter earned a title with the victory.

* An unranked newly crowned champion who earned a title in a major league MMA promotion can enter the top ten even with a victory over an unranked fighter.

*A fighter will drop in the rankings if he does not fight regularly against high level competition.

*A top ten ranked fighter can become ranked in another weight division after one or more wins in his new weight class.

*A fighter can be ranked in two different weight divisions.

*Champions and fighters from prominent promotions will have an advantage over champions and fighters from promotions with lesser competition.

*A fighter will be removed from the rankings if he does not fight for two years.

*Fighters that are signed to multiple promotions will have their promotions listed based on the following criteria: 1) championship held in a promotion, 2) predominant promotion the fighter fights in, 3) promotion
last fought in.

*Rankings will be updated every month.

Thanks. Yeah he did. Hopefully DREAM sets up a fight with him and Kawajiri for the DREAM FW belt. It is rumored that their next event will be in April or May.

I'd have to agree. Sergei hasn't been active enough in MMA to merit his #1 ranking, IMO.

Yeah, Sergei needs to fight a good opponent in MMA soon here. I was hoping to see him on the DREAM NYE card in MMA. Sucks he went to get outpointed in the kickboxing tournament instead.

Yeah, possibly soon if Sergei is not fighting MMA against someone relevant. The first of 3 DREAM cards is rumored in April or May. Really hope they put him on this or another card with ONE FC.

cd...you do an excellent job with the rankings but again i have to say it...

michael chandler has to be #1....he beat eddie, he has never loss and holds the most important belt imo... how is alvarez above him???

also pat curran has to be #1....he is alot better and has fought alot better competition than Georgi Karakhanyan....also georgi was 2-2 in bellator and has a loss to patricio pitbull the same that came short against curran and also loose to joe warren...again this 2 rankings does not make any sense imo...

this 2 spots have to be fixed...

well change the rules then....how was takaya over curran in the first place????

georgi has loss to pitbull, last nights curran's opponent....also the joe warren loss hurts his stock imo...

since when the dream title os worth more than the bellator one????

curran is also #1 in my eyes

michael chandler has to be #1....he beat eddie, he has never loss and holds the most important belt imo... how is alvarez above him???

also pat curran has to be #1....he is alot better and has fought alot better competition than Georgi Karakhanyan....also georgi was 2-2 in bellator and has a loss to patricio pitbull the same that came short against curran and also loose to joe warren...again this 2 rankings does not make any sense imo...

this 2 spots have to be fixed...

Will probably be changing them soon.

well change the rules then....how was takaya over curran in the first place????

georgi has loss to pitbull, last nights curran's opponent....also the joe warren loss hurts his stock imo...

since when the dream title os worth more than the bellator one????

curran is also #1 in my eyes

Takaya was top FW after beating prev. number 1 Bibi. He did lose since then but rebounded strong. He was top FW while Pat Curran was still a LW.

I will prob. be changing the rules next month though where you there will be a high likely hood of being number 1 if you beat number 1 but may go to number 2.

wekka, there is another flyweight climbing the ranks. Joshua Sampo just submitted Alex Vila with a guillotine choke. Vila will be dropping out of the BW contenders list with this loss and the change in division.

Sampo also took out another G-MMA ranked fighter in Antonio Banuelos just a few months ago.

He now has back-to-back wins against G-MMA ranked bantamweight fighters.

Sampo is right outside of being a contender with that win. A loss to Campuzano and the return of Urushitani might make it difficult to find room for him in next month's ranking.

Sounds good. Hopefully a bigger org. picks Sampo up soon. Yeah, that loss to Campuzano hurts a bit since he is last one listed in the contenders.

Forgot Urushitiani is coming back to the global orgs. That will be a great addition to the rankings.

That also might be the last we see of Vila. I believe that's three straight and he's 42. Wouldn't be surprised to see him retire.

Sampo also might not stay outside of Zuffa very long now. With the releases of Papazian and Urushitani, they'll definitely be looking for replacements. I can't think of anyone better outside of Campuzano and Tome.

I'm excited to see Urushitani back in Asia, whether that is back in Shooto or One. Before his losses to Benavidez and Lineker, he was arguably the top flyweight in the world.

I agree, that was a huge loss and he is on a bad streak now. Could be the end for him at that age.

I would love to see Urushitani with ONE FC. Would be a great signing for them and an excellent addition to their new flyweight division. I'm sure someone will pick him up soon. They should try to get Sampo as well. Start stacking up this new division.

I wonder how Campuzano's contract is written, if he can sign with another promotion.
