Rankings are not retroactive as we discussed before.  Just because someone has a previous defeat does not mean they can never pass the fighter that beat them in the past.  That system is totally and absolutely and mathematically impossible which does not and cannot work at all.  A system like that would say Ryo Chonan should be number 1 MW in the world because he beat Anderson Silva before but everyone who ever beat Ryo Chonan should be ahead of him and everyone who beat them should be ahead of them and so on.  Doesn't work that way.

Silva beat number 3 ranked fighter Materla so he will now be ranked above him. Silva will be at 7 with Materla at 8.

What? #13? Who has Miranda, guseinov and cooper beaten lately?

Yeah 13.  He can move up a max of 3 spots with a win over an unranked opponent.  Winner of the WSOF MW GP could be ranked in the top 10 at MW.  Miranda, Guseinov, and Cooper could drop in the future but right now it would not be justified to begin dropping them in the rankings.

Materla has been climbing the ranks by defending his title.  He got to number 3 but will now fall to number 8 as Silva will be just ahead of him at number 7.

having a 9-8 fighter ranked is an embarrassment. Just because he won 1 fight doesnt mean he should be ranked. And definitely not above Materla. They are 1-1 and he has a better record

When you beat a fighter you get the rank above them.  Materla lost and lost by KO at that so Silva should be above him.  Lowely ranked WW Matt Serra defeated world champ GSP and jumped over everyone to take the number 1 spot at WW when he won the belt as he should have.  Brock Lesnar beat number 2 ranked UFC HW champion Randy Couture and jumped to number 2 in the world rankings with a 3-1 record.  If you beat someone in a combat sport, you move above them and usually take their belt if they have one.

It wouldn't matter if they had past losses against them or not.  Cain had a past loss against JDS and when he beat him in the rematch, not only did he take his title, he also took his number 1 ranking position.

Lesnar wasn't 8-8 when he won the title and earned the number 2 spot in the worldwide rankings, he was 2-1 and became 3-1 with the victory.  A bit worse if you ask me.

In a perfect world, there would be a worldwide tournament system setup and the world champion would always be fighting the top contender.  In the real world, with all these different promotions and the thousands and thousands of fighters all over the world, and the numerous promotional champions all over the world, ranked fighters and champions fighting un-ranked opponents is inevitable with only 15 spots to share per division.  I account for this in the ranking rules by only allowing a fighter to move up a maximum of 3 spots at a time after defeating fighters ranked below them (or un-ranked fighters).

I wish there was a system in MMA that had a single world champion per division regardless of promotional affiliation and bi-annual tournaments to determine number one cross-promotional contenders to fight in a Super Bowl of MMA.  Hopefully one day we see it.  It would be unreal.

I agree but that makes my point! Beacuse not everybody will face ranked opposition, there has to be a way for fighters like mutapcic and alvey to jump spots! And it is with common opposition , again alvey beat silva recently he has to be above him and live beat alvey, they should be ahead of materla, who by you own addition has not faced ranked opposition!

Again Sam alvey ko silva and mutapcic beat alvey! Jay was nothing or is nothing more than a gatekeeper! Ksw at this moment has to step up their game and find real challengers for their champs instead of .500 fighters! That's why IMO materla is the perfect example of a overhyped overrated champ!

Ksw has to go out sign yushin okami and put him vs mamed if you want to gain the respect of fans!

I really hope they don't do mamed vs jay silva! That would be awful!

And I would loose all kinds of respect for the show

There are definitely ways for them to get ranked.  Like I said, if Mutapcic wins his next fight in WSOF coming up, he will enter the MW contenders list.  The winner of the WSOF MW GP who will hold the WSOF MW title will enter the MW top 10.

Again, rankings are not retroactive, so because he beat him in the past does not mean he all of sudden just moves in front of him in the rankings out of nowhere.  If that were the case rankings would just be a jumbled mess of fighters getting moved in all over the place.  Ryo Chonan would be the number 2 MW in the world but then people will say but Chonan lost against fighters X, Y, and Z in the past so they should be ahead of him and so on and so on and so on forever.  That type of system is mathematically impossible.  An initial ranking system was established here in February 2012 based on input from many people and from that point on, the rankings have been adjusted after every single fight that has taken place and a summary update has been written to explain every single change after fights occur.  All these changes have been made in accordance with the Ranking Rules established as posted in the OP each month.

Johan you seem obsessed with my rankings! Lol

I'll say this! Mario Miranda, brett cooper and Arthur guseinov should not be ranked!

Falcao and slava should be lower

Alvey, mutapcic and David branch should be replacing the 3 that I think should be out!

And I will say this materla and emeev are the 2 most overrated fighters ranked! Beacuse their opposition has not been the best! Materla just loose to a jay silva and emeev beat Miranda for a title but has not been active and their first meeting IMO Miranda won! 1 fight in 2013 and he beat Albert Duraev 4-2 for a chance of a title

I agree that Silva was not a great opponent for champion Materla. I know they are friends but Mamed should have been fighting Materla for the belt.  I think that is bull shit.  Mamed is clearly their best MW and should be carrying the belt.

I agree that KSW should step it up and sign Okami to fight their uncrowned champ Mamed.  Would love to see them fight.

At this point though, KSW had an unranked 8-8 fighter fight their MW champion who was a ranked fighter in the G-MMA rankings and he was defeated by KO.  So sticking with the ranking system, Silva gets the nod above Materla but Materla will take a decent drop in the rankings and Silva will be just above him.

I think it was worse when UFC had a 2-1 fighter fighting for the UFC HW title and the number 2 spot in the world rankings but they did and he won so he was legitimately the number 2 HW in the world with a 3-1 record because that is how combat sports ranking systems work.  This is only one example of that.

KSW definitely should step up their match making for their MW champs and have Mamed fighting for that title and hopefully sign Okami to take on Mamed as well.

Agree cd! Nothing personal with you or the job you do with the rankings is more of upset of people defending ksw and their poor job of finding suitable opponents for their champs

how do you rank the mw division?

Miranda was M-1 MW champ before and their best MW.  He was ranked higher back then and has declined in the ranks quite a bit since and could continue to get passed by.  He has two losses in a row so another could drop him out completely.

Guseinov is the top MW contender in the M-1 division.  He moved up a little bit after his beautiful spinning back kick KO in his last win.

Brett Cooper is the number 2 contender in Bellator's MW division.  He just lost a very close bout against MW champ and top ranked Shlemenko last month.  He is only ranked at number 10.

Falcao was the top contender in Bellator after going through a MW tournament (where he defeated Slava and others) to fight number 1 ranked Shlemenko for the belt.  He lost that fight but is still one of the top MWs outside UFC.

Slava was a top M-1 fighter who moved to Bellator and he would be higher ranked if he would have beaten Falcao.  Due to that loss he sits just one spot below him in the rankings.

The WSOF MW champ will be top 10 after the tournament ends.

And I would loose all kinds of respect for the show
I agree that Silva was not a great opponent for champion Materla.

Put mamed for a title fight but not vs silva please
Agreed.  No, definitely not personal.  Good to discuss these things, that's what forums are all about.

Yeah, non-title fights hardly ever make sense unless they are cross-promotional super fights or if they are catch weight super fights.  Silva KO'd Materla so he will be ranked above him with or without the title.  KSW basically made their title totally meaningless with this fight being a non-title fight.  There top MW is Khalidov, their number 2 MW is now Jay Silva, and their third best MW is their champion Materla.  They should just throw that belt in the garbage or give it to Silva and have him fight Khalidov for it.
